Sump issue

Hello all

Yesterday I was cleaning my sump out in the mud or gunk smelt like total manure as I’m guessing it should, I’m trying to grow Chaeto But not having much luck. It seems to get dirty after about two weeks and doesn’t grow very well. I have a Kessil H80 tuna for light and a bubble Magus curve 7. I have tested the water parameters and everything is on par according to the guide. It just seems to get really dirty in there and I’m wondering if there is something I can put in between the baffles that will help capture some of the waste so the sub stays clean. Maybe I could put a nail or something in there what would you suggest? Maybe a small powerhead or a bubble bar

I keep a bag of carbon in my sump, also helps with smell

I really should clean mine but I am scared what I would smell.

Do you use a filter sock, floss, foam, or roller mat? That may help keep the junk out of the sump.

Was there a "lot" of gunk?

I do not have anything in there other than the protein skimmer. I could use a sock but I heard they get clogged it fairly quick

Some like it, some don’t. They do need to be cleaned to avoid being clogged or producing nitrate. I keep a few, change 5-7 days, wash and rinse and good to go. My sump never gets overun with detris.

Socks are not the only method. Depends on how your s7mp is set up.

Yes I took out probably about 16 ounces

I will take a picture and add it.
It’s 30 gallons possibly 25 protein skimmer in the beginning return pump in the end and the refusal him in the middle where my heaters are also
