Sump layout ideas

For those of you who have built your your own sumps, what lay out do you prefer?

looking for simple , I’m leaning toward this design

That is basically how mine is set up, but I also have filter sock holders for occasional use. I wish I had managed to feed the refugium with water draining from the display tank rather than water that has gone through the skimmer section.
 
i don't see anything wrong with the conventional: drain(filter sock), skimmer, refugium, baffles(carbon/gfo), return.

personally, your design may or may not hinder macro algae growth in the fuge chamber. i don't have experience with this though.

Would you have the drain teed off to have some of the Dirty water go to the fuge on the end?

Yeah thats what I would do. Probably keep a ball or gate valve on both halves of the tee for adjustment. Honestly I am sure both layouts are comparable as far as nutrient export. If you really want to maximize algae growth in the refugium, in theory feeding more nutrients rich water would be better, I think.
