sump level

I am starting a 180 gallon tank with a 46 gallon sump. My sump has a protein skimmer also. My question is, what level of water should I maintain in my sump?

Section in which the skimmer is at, usually is around 7" deep. But most put them up on stilts to get that depth fine tuned. What you want is enough space in the sump that when you lose power, that the back flow from the pipes doesn't overflow the sump.
