Many use lids to lessen the amount of ato water needed. Might lids lower ph as there's not as much fresh air being circulated regardless of animals breathing in the room? What other deleterious effects do/might lids have on our tanks?

If you are worried about PH, they have lids that are made of mesh and breathe very easily. But they then don't allow you to retain more water, but give evaporated cooling, but allow dirt, dog hair, sprays, etc to get in. Glass lids will have less evaporation, can lower PH, and keep unwanted stuff in the air out of the tank(aerosols, dust, dog hair, etc). Glass lids block some light. Glass lids are easy to take on and off but harder to clean. The mesh lids can be annoying to put together. Everything has it's pros and cons.
I use a glass lid. If you are worried about PH, if you run a skimmer it will more then make up for it in terms of airflow, you could also run two half pieces and leave a small crack for flow, and from my own experience, i have a hard time getting my PH to 8.3, im usually around 8.5-8.6. I do use reef builder to maintain it as it's supposed to give an 8.3ph.
