I have a 65gal tank with a corner overflow. I have a traditional style overflow with the u shaped drain and single return. It has been quite as a church mouse until the past few days. I have a gate valve on the drain and had it tuned perfect with no noise in the sump. Over the past few days I continue to get a sound I would describe as gurgling or air coming back up from the sump in the drain line. And it comes in spurts. It last apox 10-15 sec. sometimes longer. then almost stops. Then starts the noise again. If i back the gate valve down a slight turn and it stops. But by the next day the sound is back and I repeat the process. Any ideas on why it has started this or how to fix it? Thank you in advance for any help.

Sounds like the flow from your return pump is decreasing. Sometimes this is due to algae growing in the hose or pipe, or on the pump inlet screen. I would record you clean the pump and inspect the hoses. The way I clean the pump is remove and soak for 30 mi utes in a 50:50 vinegar and RODI water solution. Then rinse in RODI and reinstall the pump.

Thank you. I will try that and keep an eye on my return.
