Is a sump that much better than a canister filter for a newbie, non gear head, with a 45 gallon tall tank? My husband bought me everything to do a goldfish tank with including the tank and a Fluval 407 canister filter, but my true love of reefs has won out. My husband has just decided to start a new freshwater planted tank. Should I give the canister filter to him and try to do a sump or stick to the canister? What would you recommend for ease of use for a beginner? I have no idea where to begin with sumps. We just got a HOB protein skimmer and I was considering a HOB refugeum before i knew he was starting this new tank. My tank has almost finished cycling but I don’t mind delaying if it would be a lot better in the long run. Thank you in advance. All advice is welcome. I’m brand new to saltwater, but I’m trying to do my research and get the best setup I can afford. The health and happiness of my livestock is priority. We view them as pets.
