I ran a canister for many years, it did the job well but maintenance was a hassle.

Eventually converted to a sump and haven't looked back.

Have a 125g African cichlids tank on a Fluval canister, Eheim Pro before that. The Eheim lasted ten years. The Fluval uses four foam filters all easy to wash and reuse once a month. A little Dr Tim’s after a water change to add some good bacteria. Takes less than ten minutes. The poop makes an amazing plant fertilizer.
The 90g mixed reef is sump and home made filter socks/mesh. Middle section full of chaeto.
My thought is you need a sump to act as a filter and the return pump can get your flow rates to 10X tank size.

Thanks! The main reason I got the canister was because there was always a spec of something floating about in the water, I absolutely hated that! Now the water is crystal clear .

I'm on team sump for salt and canister for fresh. Unless you have a giant freshwater bioload a canister seems to do the job. I do feel like a fresh water wet/dry would however make cleaning much easier than messing with the canister and it's seals.

The rubber gasket/seal for the top part of most filters. I have had some slow dribble from a failing one leak a couple times. It's an easy fix, but it's just one more part to worry about. I kept mine in a drip pan just to be safe.
