Sump Overflowing

I have a 90 gallon tank with a Pro Clear 125 Wet/dry filtration system. When I turn it off during feeding it keeps on filling and if I do not turn it back on it will overflow. In my panic mode.
If my power goes out due to a storm, I will have a mess!
Whats going on? Why is it doing this?
My water level in sump is well below my line I made when I set it up so why is it doing this?

More context would help(how deep are your return lines in the tank...etc), but it sounds like your sump isn't large enough to hold the drain down from your display tank.

DO you have a siphon Break so the drain down water stops when it sucks air?

+1, more info about your setup particularly how you have your return and drain would help. It sounds like an issue with an antisiphon break or retrun line has lowered in the water since you set your initial water lines in your sump.

It will back siphon from the display until air enters the returns to break the siphon. Some pictures of your setup would help.

sounds like you have a siphon. siphon happens when you turn the pump off, it will actually start sucking water from the return spot and send it backwards. kind of hard to explain but that sounds like your issue.

what i did is install a check valve (one way road) in my return line so the water only can move up the line, and will not be able to move down the line

Sounds like you need a syphone break

also want to say - I had no idea what a siphon was when I set up my sump. It took me about 4 minutes and about 40 gallon of water overflowing before I figured it out.

Yea a picture of your return in the water would be helpful, it's very easy to fix this issue.

Drill hole(s) in your return line, above the water line. When the pump goes off, the hole(s) will suck air, and break the Syphon. I did mine inside the In tank Overflow, so it shoots jets on the overflow wall, to help keep it clean. Remember to periodically clean the hole(s).

I’m very interested in seeing a video of the op’s setup running and then unplugged. @Sdot is trying to prevent this from happening as a result of our input.

I think it is likely that others are correct and it is related to siphon. However there can be other causes....seen a leaky overflow box be the cause of sump floods more than once for example. Pictures and/or video would be great.

My reactor, and there returns and supply lines can also get active with a siphon during power outage/ feeding events. More info for reliable results.
