I guys this is my first post. I have been reading the forum for a while and the form contains good advice.
My question is regarding a new tank I set up. The instructions were not good and I would like verification that I did it correctly. You can see the tank has a single hole drilled the big blue pipe that is curved is the down flow, the middle attachment connected to the larger green hose is the return and the smaller attachment in the right side is a drain. Recently I drained some water using this hose and the water was full of waste I checked the return box and it was collecting waste s well is this normal? Also what kind of plumbing system is this so I can do morethank you,
DB

What brand tank system is this? Need a picture from top of tank showing your overflow layout to better answer your question

Welcome to R2R, and as billwill said, please post more details about the brand/model of this setup and pictures of the rest of the system.

If I understand your question correctly, it has a large pipe that feeds the Dow flow diverted across and out into the sump. In the middle of that big pipe there is a smaller pipe fed from the return pump that goes up to the top and out into the display tank see pictures:

From what it looks like:
Some of the detris would build up in the hose until you open up the valve. Usually filter socks would catch if all the water was gping directly to the sump, but since the flow from the overflow is pushing downward, detris will inevitably get into that hose.
I would just open that valve from time to time so the build up isn't too much. Is there something that explains a purpose to having a line connected to the main overflow?

No there there are no instructions and when I contact them they send me a different set that has two holes in the tank and they tell me it is similar, but it’s not. It might be better if I spoke Chinese but I don’t. I appreciate your help though.
Do you have any idea what type of plumbing ‘‘tis is? (Durso, Herbie, & Bean Animal)?

Durso is 1 drain, that would be closest to what you got. It is very strange setup for sure though.
Does the sump hold enough water when your pump is turned of? Also, what size chamber is the one with the return pump?

Yes it seems to stay right at the level with or without the pump running. The return pump area is pretty big, I’d say about 19 by 10 inches. The entire sump is 48 inches wide with 5 chambers.
1 wet dry area, 2 for bio filter, 1 smaller rotation area, and the return area.
