sump/protein skimmer problem

Hey Guys I'm new to the hobby and have been having problems with air bubbles in my tank. I found out they are coming from my protein skimmer. I an not exactly sure what kind of skimmer I have, I think a backpack. I tried adjusting the air valve on the air pump for the skimmer, but the bubbles only go away if I stop all air flow to skimmer. Again I'm new to the hobby and don't really know how the protein skimmer works so any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks for reading.

if it is a new skimmer it will need to build up a slime coating first, that usually takes a week or so.Set it to where the bubbles are coming about half way up the collection tube and leave it be.
