Sump Pump Question?

The tank is 300 gal. How many gallons per hour should the pump be. Have no space so it has to be internal. Tank demensions are 79 x 28 x 32"H with internal overflows. The sump is going to be close to 50gal. Any suggestions will be appreciated.:bigsmile:

A dart would be ideal but it is to much flow for a 50gal sump been there done that... Try a laguna 2400 or a quiet one pump around 2000gph would be the ticket IMO..

A lot will depend on what your overflows can handle. What size bulkheads and how many bulkheads do you plan to have for your drains to your sump? Also, what kind of tank is it (softy, lps, sps, mixed) and are you counting on your return providing a lot of flow, or just looking to get it through the sump for the skimmer and refugium?

mixed reef,both bulkheads are1.5" downflow, andthe flow in the tank will come from wavemakers

Ocean Runner 6500 or Mag 18 but I lean towards the OR 6500 as it's a better pump. Quieter, runs cooler, delivers more gallons per watt of power consumed and very reliable.If Eheim made a pump in that flow i would also recommend it but the 1262 isn't big enough, moer like the OR 3500.

I'd go with a pretty low flow pump then. Mag 18 would be overkill IMO. Since most of your flow is going to be coming from in the tank, the slower the turnover through your sump, the less chance of microbubbles, etc. Extra by-product of a smaller pump would be less energy consumption.

A Mag 18 or OR 6500 is not overkill on a 300 gallon display with a 50 gallon sump by any stretch. 3x to 5x the display volume is roughly 1000 to 1500 GPH, after head losses he should be right in there with either pump. I use a OR 3500 at roughly 850 GPH after losses on a 100G with a 30G sump and it could be a little more with no problems.
