Currently I have a rio 1700. It's kinda old it's working fine as far as I know. But it's noisy and sure if its big enough. I have a 60 gal tall tank. Was wondering if I should upgrade or not? Any info is much welcome. Thanks.

The Rio 1700 is rated at 642 gph and max head 6 ft. Personally, I don't like noise. So, it is a personal choice on your part, too. I recently switched out a brand new return pump for a Sicce pump because of noise and it came with the added benefit of reducing my temperature three degrees. I'd need a lot more info to make an accurate determination. But a guess would be that at 4 feet of head you're probably only getting 150 ?? gph. There are so many variable to give you good advice. So, welcome to Reef 2 Reef! And, post some more info about your tank and let everyone help you out, so you can enjoy this hobby to the fullest without making some of the bad mistakes that we did starting out.

The Rio 1700 has a rated GPH of 352gph at a 4 foot head. Here's a link, click on "specifications": TAAM, Aquarium Products

I use the Rio 3100 for my FOWLR and the 2100 for my refugium, both running for over 3 years now. Both are very, very quiet. If your unit is noisy, something is wrong with it. Do you still have the suction cup legs?

You generally want 5X-10X DT volume as your sump flow. So, that's 300-600 gph for your 60 gallon. Rio is one of those "excellent for the buck" pumps. Since your current pump is unusually noisy and likely has something wrong with it, you can replace it with another 1700 model, or go up as high as the 3100 model.

352 gph is best case scenario. You'll need to subtract from head pressure each 90 and reduction in tubing size also. Since we don't know that I wrote "guess". With a max. head pressure of 6 feet I'm assuming that any restriction would greatly reduce gph output. For example, two 90's would bring it down to 180 gph, best case.

Quiet One Pumps. I run one. You never know its running.

I don't have the suction cups and I do think there is a problem with it since I bought it used and brought it home I was cleaning it and was hearing what sounded like loose things moving around inside it as I was shacking it. Thanks for the advice everyone I will look into getting a new one with more power. Thanks.

Take a look at this site. The Mag 7 is rated at 700 gph, but it has 11.65 feet head. I'm not saying that this is the pump you should get. I'm pointing this out because most other pumps have twice the head pressure than the RIO's. I have been using a Mag 7 on my 75 gallon for a couple years without a single issue. If you are going to get a Mag pump this is the cheapest place to get one. Supreme Classic General Purpose Utility Pump Magnetic Drive Pump Aquarium Water Pumps

Ok so after looking at the flow rate for both the rio 3100 and mag 7 I'm look towards the rio. I have about 5' to the top and the rio has better numbers. And give and take some it should be +/- 600 gph at the head. I'm havering a little trouble with the circulation of water since the tank is tall 30" and a little extra power would be ok right? I have two power heads in there at the moment.

I have a 110T FOWLR. It is also 30" tall, and the return pump is a Rio Plus 3100. I have two 1050 Koralia powerheads in there as well. Flow is not as critical for FOWLR tanks, but it helps if you orient your powerheads and return nozzles to provide vertical flow in tall tanks.

Here's a photo of the tank and how the flow is set-up. Return nozzles and powerheads are pointed diagonally forward and downward. This provides excellent flow across the whole tank all the way to the substrate.

Thanks for the info ill look into placing the power heads on the back like that but I think I need to get 1 new one its and old hydor 2 and doesn't even reach the other side of the tank. The other power head is a hydor 1400.

Gen X have the external fans. You can hear those things running.

Very nice. When I ran mine, it wasn't the vibration that was heard, it was the noise from the fan on the tail. Maybe they figured that part out on the newer ones.
