So I am doing my tank move today and just been reading up about the best way to fill up etc then read about power cuts. Now I am panicking as where I live we seem to get a lot! Now I am scared my house will flood out. What happens in a power cut situation and your not home to turn pipes off?

Sump holds the water that gets siphoned back, then a back up battery keeps the surface of the water going with 1 powerhead. It lasts i think 8 or 9 hours but thats only because it uses so little electricity.

If you dont want your sump to get overfilled, you just need your nozzles positioned at a height where it stops sucking water back before the sump gets overfilled.

You don’t fill your sump up more than 3/4 the way up, most cases 1/2 way up. That way when power goes out the extra water will fill up most of your sump, no valve turning necessary :)

Thank you, makes complete sense now lol!

Is the power supply really that bad in the Channel Islands?

If it’s only a couple of hours at a time it’ll have no ill effects...as people have said, just don’t fill your sump up too much - as long as the final chamber has enough water to cover the return pump you’ll be fine.

I was over in Jersey a few weeks ago and thought it was such a lovely place that I’d like to move there...although I did wonder if there were any fish shops to continue with the hobby :)

At your overflow , drill a hole to create a siphon break (see on you tube, how it works) or you can install a check valve to prevent water flow down to sump , which the sump should hold it all anyway.

...and remember to clean this hole out on occasion.
