In the process of piecing together my first build and I’m wondering about this chamber on the used sump I bought. I assumed it was a refugium but it only has one notch on top, so no real in and out, is this typical? Would I rely on a pump to get water in and out?

I don’t think it’s the fresh water holding area as I’m pretty sure that’s the long one that runs the length of the sump. Any guidance is appreciated

Looks like an atypical.set up. I made my own and it had three sections in a 20 long. That's it. It's difficult for me to see this unless I was standing right over it. What's circled I think is the fuge. The return on the left. The big section for the skimmer. The long section ATO? Lol, just guessing!

that baffle lay out is kind of weird whats the long chamber for ?
The guy at the shop where they ordered it figured it was the fresh water reservoir which makes sense as there was no real residue in there from salt or anything

Yeah the other chambers I’ve got figured it’s just that circled one I’m not sure of as again there’s only one notch taken out of the top like an overflow so the only way water could get in or out is through there, maybe he just used it as some sort of emergency overflow chamber?

i think i got er figured, looks like a refugium that you’d run a drain directly into that would then spill over into the skimmer section, i would have thought you’d want some sort of mechanical filter before the fuge but i guess lots of people have success doing it this way

I agree it looks like a refugium section. Like you noticed, it needs to be fed water somehow.

You’d could T off of the return line with a valve to send some flow to the box, and it overflows into the skimmer section. Or if you’d prefer, a small pump could pump from the skimmer section up to the refugium.

I probably wouldn’t feed it from the drain line, bypassing mechanical filtration.

yeah i thought feeding it straight from a drain was odd too but apparently there’s a whole school of thought where you’d t off of your main drain and run 20% flow directly into the fuge and the rest through your socks or whatever, theres a name for it and everything, i’m gonna look more into it before deciding how i run that section

I think the triton method uses minimal to no mechanical filtration. The rock and algae in the refugium act somewhat as mechanical filtration. But typically the refugium is the first stage before the skimmer. Maybe there’s a new method though. Good luck!
