On the verge sounding stupid... why is everyone so set on needing a sump, Yet everyone is so down on canister filters? Essentially aren't they similar, A place to put filter media... and wouldn't the collections from the filter sock in a sump produce nitrates just the same way filters in the canister would

I have a hob refugium, hob refugium with chemipure elite, and am adding a phosban this weekend.

Yup, you are correct. But a Sump is where all your equipment is hid from the DT. Also, to grow Macro Algae, add reactors, add probes, all out of sight. And the MAcro Algae is there to help maintain water quiality.

Also sump is a way to add water volume to your setup. The more water volume, easier it is to maintain the tank paramaters. Filter socks only take me less than 1 minute to change, as compared to pulling apart a canister filter.

nothing wrong with canister filters other than they need regualr cleaning to keep from producing excessive nitrates. taking them apart to clean can be frustrating and time consuming. I do not use a canister filter now, but have in the past along side a sump, and i don't regret a minute of it.

I was on another forum and I searched canister filter because I want to get a more powerful filtration set up and on one thread the members were all telling one guy to just throw it out. And that's what I've heard so much lately. I would like something to catch all the non dissolved stuff. Because my refugium is looking pretty nasty from all the stuff the pump sucks up.

Would you guys recommend a canister filter or no? I'm looking at something easy to clean like the fluval g series

Does your HOB refugium have maco alage? you can always add a couple snails/crabs here to help clean it up

I did have some but it died, not I added more light to the regugium and the little bit that was left is growing back. I hear the crabs eat pods. I've read you should stir up the refugium sand bed every so often to get it all out of there. Is that true?

I won't run a canister filter, I use mine to vacuum out my sump. But, as long as you keep them clean, theres no reason you can't. Most just get lazy on them and the Nitrates creep up.

You don't vacuum your fuge though right

Yes, my sump is my fuge. I vacuum out the detritus on the bottom.

Won't you suck out all the pods and the good stuff you want?

No no. Just the detritus on the bottom of the sump. I do not vacuum out the Chaeto or anything. Just the garbage. If some bristle worms are in the, can't be helped, gotta get it out of the tank.
