I need guidance not to make a mistake. I want to in the future build a pico aquarium for my fiancé's desk. I was thinking about a DIY canister filter. I have already built some and they work good. I plan to use lava rocks for the bio media, some sponge for filtration, carbon for clarity and phosphate reducing sponge of the separations to help the mini reef i plan to build. My question is can i place the lava rocks in my sump without compromising my 55 gallon glass aquarium that i already have set up? So i can build the necessary bacteria to cycle the pico safely and easier.

Off topic from what you're asking but i wonder if you've looked in the reef vase some people have done? Very elegant perfect for a desktop, no complex filtration...

Other than that I'm not sure why it would harm you're system to put those things in the sump but I'm not the most educated on that kind of media...

Good luck!
