Went to petco and picked up 20 gallon long tank for a sump. is 20 gal long going to be enough tank sump for a 75 or 90 gallon build? thinking i made a mistake and should get a 30 gallon? they did not have a 30 gal only a 29 gallon and size was the same as far a length.

Bigger is better but it has to fit your space and equipment.

I use an eshopps rs-100 on my 90 and it's total volume is about 20g, it only uses about 1/2 of that; it's recommended for 75-125g tanks.

this was the most frustrating parts for me was picking out what to use for a sump there is no rules like with rock or sand it s just as big as you can get is better. i went with a 80 frag tank. i think this is the perfect size for my 210 gallon tank. but the main thing to consider is will you skimmer and other equipment you plan on using fit. also remember you need room above to work on the equipment i made my stand bigger then my tank so i could put a bigger sump in i just like the idea of being able to have all the equipment out of the display tank.

Do you have a pic with everything in it ? Like skimmer return etc. I am thinking it is a little tight.

It is super tight, but it's the footprint of the stand for the tank; a 90 and 75 have the same footprint. I have a 5g top off reservoir the sump and dosers and electronics mounted. And it is miserable working in there, I even have an algae reactor mounted outside.
