So I was originally going to use a large canister filter for my tank, but the Mrs commented we should get a bigger tank for more fish. I immediately said I believe you’re right dear. So, I’m looking at a 150 gal I found for sale. Going to that size I’ve decided I need a sump. My question is, I’d you use bio balls or something like that, do you not need a refugium. The sump I’m looking at doesn’t seem to have a spot for one when I get my skimmer and other stuff in there but there is a spot for bio balls but no waty to mount a light the way it’s constructed. I’m right to assume the bio balls will be the biological filter so no refugium needed, right?

utilize that area for refugium or chaeto. pics of sump will help determine how you can best set it up and utilize space in sump

I would say from right to left:

Filter sock holders—> skimmer and other mechanical media—> return chamber (return pump chamber), auto top off, etc.

So no place for either bio balls or refugium then. So all biological filtering done with the rock then... and what does “other mechanical media” mean?

I personally would look at a different sump will accommodate your needs having return pump/skimmer/refugium area utilizing same length.
Look up synergy reef, emerald and tunze sumps which offer such. For economic cost aqueon 4 is also decent
