Is there a good rule of thumb as far as how big your sump should be in regards to your display tank? I am in the initial stages of my next tank and thinking about going with a 40B if I can find something around that size that is rimless.

I would agree! The best advice would be to get the biggest sump that you can fit under the tank/ in the stand. The extra water volume is always a benefit, and having room to work / move around in your sump will save you lot of headaches.

I disagree with what everyone else says. While bigger may be better in some respects, keep in mind you do not want your sump taking up your entire space below your tank.

For example I have a 90gal tank with a 30 gal sump. I have absolutely no room to work down there, no room for equipment other then 1 reactor, i can not remove my skimmer to clean and barely get my skimmer cup out. I wish I had gone with a 20 long instead. Now if you have a space such as a fish room and do not need to keep your sump below your tank in a stand, I highly recommend a rubbermaid tub.

+1 to the advice above. Go as big as possible, the added volume will make the system more stable

Granted i don't have to stay with in a stand as mine is in the basement, but i have a 40b on a 45g cube and thinking of adding a 20g sump for the skimmer only, so i say go as big as you can more water volume the more stable you will be IMO
