I have been in and out of the hobby for almost 20 years.. I have never had a sump..everything has always been HOB.
for this next tank I am considering going with a sump..
Display will be a 75 or 90
I have a 28 gallon bow front that will be available for a sump.
2 things
what will I need for a non reef ready tank to create flow etc for a sump underneath the display.

and what will I need to do to the 28 bowfront to create the sump.

I do have a insump capable skimmer waiting already

You have a few options with your display. If you get one that isn't ready you can do a HOB overflow but they are prone to flooding issues during power outages. You could also drill the tank yourself as long as the walls aren't tempered. The easiest thing to do is to buy the tank pre drilled.

I've never seen a bowfront tank used for a sump. It can work but creating baffles will be a challenge. A sump can be as simple as an open tank or it can be very complex with multiple chambers. All you need is the drain lines, the tank, and a return pump. Most people like baffles between their skimmer and the return pump to help strip air bubbles out of the water and maintain constant water level in the skimmer section. Sock filter holders are also a nice thing to have.

So many options.

If you don't have this set up yet, I strongly recommend drilling the display tank for drains to the sump. I have had non drilled tanks with sumps in the past, and they are a headache. Plan our the kind of overflow you want, and align your drains to it. This is a very difficult thing I upgrade in the future, so it is worth taking some time to consider. I really like the shadow overflow from synergy, as it has a much lower in-sump profile than most overflows (similar to the Reef Savvy overflow).

nothing is set up yet.. build will start in mid july/ august when we move into the new house. this is why I ask now so I can purchase appropriately.. based on my learning.

I use an external overflow. Haven't had any floods yet.... That said I would have much rather tried to drill my tank in hindsight.
