Looking for sump/refugium recommendations for a stock 55gl.
Or possibly specs on building one.

I’m new to this hobby, but I imagine this will be a tough question to answer without knowing your specific goals. Sumps can be used for a plethora of purposes.

Are you looking for simply a way add volume and for a place to put your heaters?

Do you want room for a refugium for macros?

Will you be putting a protein skimmer in it?

Some people use sumps for breeding fish, a place to connected reactors, hospitalize corals or injured fish, a time-out zone for aggressive fish, copapod breeding, extra biofilter media, and so on and so on.

What do you want out of your sump?

I have a 40 breeder, and used a 29 gallon tank for my sump, since it was the largest thing that would fit inside the steel frame stand I have. I think a good rule of thumb would be to determine the interior dimensions of your stand, and try to fit as large of a footprint sump as is possible in there. As far as height consideration, you might want to ensure the ideal water level of your skimmer will be able to be achieved with the level of your baffles in your sump. Some have adjustable teeth on one baffle so you can adjust to the skimmer you have, or adjust to a different skimmer you buy in the future.

I purchased acrylic sump kit baffles from a seller on ebay, and I was very impressed with the craftsmanship he did on the acrylic. I used silicone to put the baffles in, and while that was a pain in the butt, I was able to design the chambers to the exact spacing that I wanted. So, in the end, I would build my own sump again in a heartbeat.

Here's the seller I found on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/str/jaxracks123

Trigger makes nice sumps, or you can do more economical thing and build one from kit like mentioned above. I started with trigger, worked great! Ended up building after 2 years to get exact specs I wanted.

I have a DIY sump made from a 40g breeder. My sump goes: Filter sock/skimmer section --> refugium area--> Return pump section.

I've been thinking about re-designing it, though. I don't really like the refug in the middle...too heard to control the flow through it.

Im thinking of changing it to:
Filter sock/smimmer section --> Return pump section <-- Refugium

This will allow me to tee off my drain pipe to divert some "dirty" water directly to the refug and therefore allow me to control the flow through the refug.

Just something to consider when building yours.

Yes basically a sump for skimmer, reactor, maybe refugium, filter socks return..
