So I decided to go to a little bigger tank and I'm leaving the AIO tank scene and jumping into uncharted waters with tanks that have overflow into a sump/refugium. This is the first time for me and dont know what to really expect out of having a sump/refugium. So I plan on purchasing an Oceanic Illuminata 57g tank. The seller is also throwing in a DYI 20g long sump. I dont know what type of return pump to buy, and what a decent protein skimmer would work for the tank. I also want to buy the flexible tubing instead of pvc pipes to drain the water. So my questions are, please help me with they type of return pump to buy, the GPH is its, what kind of protein skimmer to buy and where I can buy those flexible drain tubes. Please help, sorry I'm a noob with sumps, thanks in advance. Oh please remember all equipment will be going into a 20g long sump.

I'd go to Doctor Foster search Mag pump..I would think a Mag 7 or 9.5 internal pump would do you just fine..

Also go to Saltwater and Reef Aquarium Supplies - Bulk Reef Supply there online chat guys will help out tremendous on the skimmer..

Good luck with your tank..

Do you think a mag 7 will be good enough with decent return flow into the tank?
I think with a 57 gallon it be just right.. Im on my phone e and i typed up a long response b4 and it didn't post.. But ill be on tomorow. Also check out pet place. Com

A mag 9.5 will be to much i think. A mag 7 would work but yet i also think you can run a mag 5 with power heads in the DT. Im running a mag 3 on my 29g with a 15g sump/ refuge. But this is just from my experiences.

A Mag 5 would be probably more than your overflow can handle, so unless you plan to tee off it for GFO reactor I'd keep it down that small. Your bigger concern needs to be making sure your sump handles the water when you turn the power off without overflowing. If you feed too much water (i.e. too big of return pump) your display water level will be a little higher than the overflow can handle. It still runs fine, but the overflow is flooded the whole time without air being able to get in. This could be a problem when losing power if your sump can't handle all that extra volume. You might want to post pics of what your overflow design is to help clarify.
