Hi all, well I'm on my way to starting a marine tank and again could do with some experience with some questions I have about my sump and if it's possible to add a refugium?
I've attached a photo of my sump and would like to know if I can change my filter sock section that is fixed to my return pump section to turn it into a refugium of sorts. My idea was to change out the socks and replace them with plastic tubing to hold algae in ?
Any advice would be appreciated, forgive me if this is a stupid idea I've been reading about refugiums and think it'd be a good thing to have just not sure where I can house one in my sump.

Have a side view? What are the other compartments being used for? I wouldn't remove the socks. I'm fighting with a cloudy tank because I'm not using a sump with some socks

That's the best picture iv got at the moment, I only really have the second chamber free that will hold my skimmer the other chambers aren't accessible for any equipment

Rather than creating a fuge... have you given any thought about an Algae scrubber.? I have one and love it. It grows algae very well which reduces nutrients. It also is a breeding ground for pods and other microfauna. You could put one over the section you have for the live rock....depending on your needs and size of the aquarium. There are also some nice Chaeto reactors out there.... May be some options for you.

Good Luck!

Hi, thanks for the advice I did look at a reactor but wasn't sure if it had the same benefits as a refugium, the scrubber is something I know nothing about so will have a look into them, the rock in the pictures will be removed as I'm going to house my skimmer in there I'm currently running a tropical tank and am in the research stage for marine. Thanks again for the information

Would you be able to just float chaeto over the live rock?

Why all the rock in there? Not enough in the DT or BB tank? Refugium is meant to be where the rock is. If that's not an option then just run some macro in the DT. I have graciallara and caulerpa in my display that both look good.

what fish do you have, there are some really nice looking macros but unsure if my foxface would eat them.

Only a couple clowns so far. As long as they are large enough the fish probably won't out eat the growth. Even if they do what's better for you than fresh vegetables? ;)

Nah. I paid $2.00 at my LFS for a small amount of graciallara that is the size of a softball after a few weeks. I realize I lucked out on it. Can always create a boxed area with some egg crate while allowing some growth before the fish get at it

I'm running a cichlid tank at the moment that's what all the alfragrog is, I'm in the process of setting up my first marine just after ideas and advice.
After looking into algae scrubbers I'm going to do a DIY one with a led grow light I've found on Amazon
