I have 3 big pieces of Pukani and a sponge filter that has been sitting in my sump for 6+ months. The sump is part of a 9+ months active tank (DT+sump).

Is it correct that if I put those rocks and the sponge filter in a new tank, the bacteria are on the rocks and sponge will handle ammonia?

I'm seeing conflicting info on this, and more importantly, as I understand the biology, the answer should be "yes" but people say "no, you still need to cycle your new tank". It should be "yes" because live rock has the bacteria to process ammonia and nitrite --> converts it to nitrate. No?

I don't want to kill two pygmy angels...

Always worked for me. Never had an ammonia spike. Never went through a cycle and no uglies.

Following. I'm considering something very similar on my next build (somewhere in the murky future).

Provided the rocks, sponge filter, and whatever other biomedia you put in the new tank is 'rated' for that new tank, then yes, you should be cycled.
