I want to upgrade my sump to include a protein skimmer. I tried adding it to my current 10 gal sump, but it makes it very very crowded. I have a 70 gal drilled tank right now, what would be the appropriate size for a sump?

70 gallons.... what are the dimensions of the tank? I can't think of a tank that is 70. Maybe a 75? I would do a 40 breeder. You can easily put baffels in it for about $20 and be ready to go for a skimmer.

If the tank is some sort of a weird shape it may be harder to work with.

Standard 90 under a normal stand?

A 30 long (36"x12") would be great. I use one on my 75. Skimmer section, fuge section, and return pump section.

Still leaves me room for a 6 gal top off container.

i would go with a 40 breeder. gives you room for almost any size protien skimmer you want and it being able to easily house the footprint of your skimmer. I am currently running a 40 long 15 1/2"s wide and its going to be a tight fit for my protein skimmer thats footprint is about 14"x10"

It is a nice looking sump but honestly I'd have a couple of changes. As it is pictured, the return water goes into the refugium area. I would want a filter sock, but that's really a matter of preference.

From the refugium, water overflows the baffle directly to the return area - I would have made this my skimmer area, and put my return pump in the far left. I would also have cut down the height of the left baffle. This would do two things, first, it would mean I didn't have to elevate the skimmer and second it would reduce the volume of water potentially going back to the tank should the overflow fail.

The biggest issue though is that as shown, a lot of unfiltered water simply returns to the tank.

Looking closer - it looks like there is a return into the skimmer chamber and a sock behind it (has to be) - so maybe only the water coming in from the refugium side is not skimmed

I like this design. This is exactly how mine is setup. Lots of people skim after the fuge and it's to my understanding that can remove lots of pods and what not. So IMO this is the best way to go.
