Sump setup question

Hey everyone,

As always, I appreciate any help I can get or expertise lended. So initially I set up my water box frag 45.2 without a skimmerbut instead I have like 15 pounds of gulf and key live rock with an additional 10-15 in the DT. I’m also running two filter socks and they range from 200-300 micron and work pretty well. Unfortunately chaeto is not growing wellin the fuge area. Overall the tank is doing pretty well and I do like 10-15% wc every 3-4 days and because of this there’s no dosing needed. I only have three fish but I do feed rather heavy.The one thing that sort of bothers me is the phosphate runs about .1-.15 and the water clarity seems like it could be better but obviously that’s probably due to feeding style.

so here is the meat of it. I bought a eschopps s-120 from a member here and was going to run it in the fuge but would need to move some lr before. CouldI just run one filter sock and use the second filter sock section to move some of my lr to so that I have sufficient room for the skimmer? I was hoping to get some thoughts on this and appreciate any input, thanks every one and happy reefing/quarantining.

Hey Keith,

Well doing water changes every few days seems like a hassle but keep doing what you think is successful. How often do you have to clean out the filter socks and do you take both out and clean them at the same time? I just think it might alter your schedule of filter sock changing if you only went with one. One would fill much faster than two. You seem to be very hands on with changing the water so often but if it were me I would remove some of the LR and keep both of the filter socks going. Put the skimmer where the LR was and also limit your feedings. Consider running some carbon to clear up the water or phosphate media to reduce the phosphates.

Hey Matthew,

thanks for the input, it is much appreciated. The filter socks I change on an alternating schedule and usually one fills up before the other. But I do try to do one felt and the other just the netting. But the felt is a 200 and the other is a 225 and 300 depending on which one. I will try that out and move some LR to the DT to make room for the skimmer and see how it works out. As for the reactors, I’m running the water box so unfortunately the only other spot left in the sump is a 7x7 ato but I have thought of turning it into a reactor section down the road. I will keep you updated with the changes and appreciate the time and input.
