Hello! Looking for some input on my current sump situation. Just to put it out there I’m unable to get a different sump or make one because the current one comes out through the top and it isn’t worth moving the entire 125G tank to do that.

I have the eschopps generation 2 refugium sump, I believe it’s 30 gallons and the skimmer section is simply annoying because it’s also the drain section so space is extremely tight and changing out filter socks is a PITA. The skimmer also has to be raised about 2” to get the water level right and therefore it pretty much sits up against the bottom of the tank. I had 2 ideas and just looking for some input:

1) Move the skimmer to the center chamber (currently refugium) and move the refugium to the first chamber which is where the water from the display would drain. This would allow me to easily replace filter socks and have plenty of room to move the skimmer and clean when needed. Only negative I could think of for this situation is Chaeto pieces floating to the new skimmer section and getting sucked into it - which I could probably remedy by using some sort of screen or mesh.

2) Keep the refugium in the middle chamber and also move the skimmer to the middle chamber. This would actually allow me to build a platform from egg crate in the first chamber and use filter floss for filtration - a lot cheaper than filter socks. Problem with this route is I would have to use some sort of mesh screen to prevent Chaeto from getting into skimmer and I’m also concerned about copepods being demolished by the skimmer.

I appreciate how that tight spaces in and around sumps can be frustrating! As a general rule I try to keep the fuge downstream from the skimmer so the pods have the best chance to get to the main tank.
