Sump Size 190g

How much room do you have for the sump?

How much room you have in your stand or separate room. This is key!
Are you planning on useing a skimmer in your sump, and/or Refugium? Are you planning on have top off as part of your sump or Separate. Things you need to plan befor you think about the size of sump.

Well I haven't built the stand yet but I wanted to leave enough room for the top off reservoir and dosing containers. With 60'' length and 27'' width I didnt want to put a 75 gallon under there because it would take up too much space. 36'' length seems like the right length, just not sure if the 40 breeder will cut it.

Skimmer will be in sump. Reservoir will be separate. I also wanted to have an electrical panel on one of the sides of the tanks to try and have a clean wire setup.

The biggest pain is you find or build a sump to go fit there and you can't fit it in your stand because if braces make sure of that first. And I would go 3/4 of you length and 25" of your width. More water the better right but my 240 I only have a 60g sump but a Separate 40g top off and I'm building a 50g Refugium

I am curious as to why some people run a fuge in a separate tank than their sump? Is it because of running out of room in the sump?

I would also consider how much back flow will happen on a power outage. You need to have a sump which can hold that water. So a 40 g sump might not be enough imo.

In my opinion refugiums are far over rated and a ATS of Bio-Pellets would work better and take less room.

This is my biggest concern. I know I can fit my equipment in the sump but I am worried about water volume.

Are you set on the sump needing to be under the stand? If not then go get one of those big 75 / 100 gallon rubber made totes. Cheaper route than building / buying a 90 gallon sump. This will give you the volume needed for the back flow.

I live in a townhouse so I cant put the sump anywhere else. I went with the biggest tank I could :P

So build your stand around your sump. IE make the stand out of metal, not wood, so that you can get the strength and still have the room. Look at Toxic's build its a 180 with a nice metal stand.

Good luck its a tough decision in my opinion. But don't spend 400 on a sump which can be purchased for much less.
