So I've dipped my toes into reefing. Started small with a 7.5gl tank up and running for 2 months with zoas and few sps. 17 frags only lost two so far. A birds nest and a fava. the fava was due to moving to a 15gl which only keep fish and has stock lighting. The 7.5gl I put a kessil A80 TB.

So I got what I believe is a deal on 40gl for $50. So my main question is what is the recommended size sump for the 40gl.?? or would those hang on the back refuge work???? But first need to find or build a stand for tank first.
Thanks for any recommendation. :)

I am setting up a 40 breeder and using a 20 gal sump Aqueon from Petco.

hi,a 10 gal would do,but not much room recommend 20 long :)

I think that the best advice is to get the biggest sump you can reasonably fit in the space. Other than weight and size, there aren’t many problems with a large sump, but a small sump can mean compromising on some part of your filtration. If you are looking to do a diy sump, a 20 gallon long would fit the space nicely and should give you plenty of room to work with.

20 long or a 20 high. I have a 20 high which fits a small refuge area for chaeto, a reef octopus skimmer and return pump. I even have a BRS mini reactor hanging above it. This is all for a 29 gallon DT.

Don't try and go smaller. I made a 10 gallon sump for the same size tank and it was just too small....the power outtage drain capacity wasn't enough.

20 long
