Is there any guide or suggestion for the size of the sump you need? I imagine the bigger, the better. My stand is 48 inches wide, and thus allows for a lot of room inside of it to facilitate a sump. I was considering a 36 inch aquarium which I could use to fabricate my own sump. But is there a specific volume ratio I should consider?

No real volume ratio that I have heard of, but I’m kinda new to salt water as well. Generally you want to go as big as you can fit. I used a 20 gallon to make the sump for my 90 gallon tank and it was pretty tight. It was an older stand though so you might have more room. Hope that helps.

As big as you can fit. More water volume makes for a more stable system. If you are looking to purchase one, check out the IceCap sumps from Coral View. I have the 36XL on my 120. Supposedly rated for 300 gallons. There are a bunch of really cool features that come standard such as built in ATO resevoir, dosing tubes, adjustable baffles etc.
I promised @mdbannister that I would do a review of these sumps, but still haven't gotten around to it yet.. suffice it to say, I recommend them.

This right here. Just go as big as your dimensions will allow. Make sure you account for height, as well. You’ll need to reach in and move equipment around, change filter socks, empty skimmers, etc. and it’s easier to do with a lower height tank. My 90 is fairly narrow in the stand, so I could only fit a 20 long but it’s been working well so far. Good luck

I use a 40g breeder sump with my 75g tank. It brings my total water volume to around 100g. I like the extra rim in the 40g Sump... easy to add stuff and move it around.

As mentioned, the bigger the better. I also have a 90 gallon tank and run a 29 gallon sump on it (because I bought my setup used and it came with it).

Already mentioned above, but I do agree, go as big as you can to fit your equipment/add water volume. I would, however, say, I would try not to go any less than 30g for your size DT. I have a 108g DT and have around a ~32g sump. Works well for me and the equipment I have/have planned, not to mention being it's a Red Sea tank, I really had no choice!

Have a 20l under my 90. Didn't go bigger, just because I already had the 20l sump from my previous tank. Its enough room for my skimmer, fuge and return and doesn't overflow if the power goes out...fairly close though.
