Sump size to tank size ratio

I've been looking around and checking out people's build threads. I'm slowly trying to acquire parts and pieces o equipment for when I can get a larger tank. I'm not afraid of building my own sump, if it doesn't work ill just try again. Just wondering if there is a size ratio people go by. I know the bigger the better, and as big as you can fit. I'm hoping for a 125-175 so I figured I would start designing a sump for that. Any input would be appreciated

You want as big as you have room for, if it going inside the stand then it obviously has to be smaller than the display. You want to consider leaving room in the stand for extra equipment like top off reservoir, external skimmer (if that is what you choose) etc.

Lol that part I figured out. Was more thinking of how equipment is rated to tank size. Or with a sump does it not really matter as it is more of an expansion of the display tank.

I agree, as large a sump as possible. When getting other equipment, be sure to include the capacity of the sump in your total system size. You can get a lot of sump under a 6' stand (assuming the 125 is a 6 footer). You also need to be sure the sump can be put in the stand. Many store bought and DIY stands have cross braces and supports that make it difficult to install/remove a sump once the tank is in place.
