Kinda dumb question here that I’m thinking about way to hard

I’m trying to make my first sump and it seems like generally you want the sump to be 25% of the tank size

does that mean the size of tank you’ll make the sump out of or only the water it will hold when its workin?

like if the display tank was 100 gallons can you make a sump out of a 25 gallons container or would you need a 50 gallon container so it has 25% of the water volume

100g tank, 25g sump, fine.
Running at half way is say 12 gallons, so when pump stops, 12 gallons can come back to sump before overflowing.
I think your numbers are fine.

Thank you for the reply, my actual tank will end up being a 125 or 150 I was just trying to get an understanding of the rule of thumb… don’t wanna end up with an underpowered filter

You think 10 gallon sump is e for a 48 gallo and what size pump and tubing would you use? Like 1000GPM and 3/4 or less
THANKS

Let me just say that I am very new to this so definitely disregard this advice compared to more qualified posters

but I was racking my brain about water volume when I was setting my tank up and made this thread but after getting my sump running now I’ll think of it more in terms of what equipment I want in a sump and having plenty of wiggle room in between everything

I didn’t know exactly what I wanted and some stuff didn’t quite fit as I expected but having more space let me have what I want with room to move everything around, stick random pieces of rock in that I’m not using, letting my long Jager heaters lay out and stuff like that

this may be way more basic info then you are looking for but maybe just get an idea of the space your equipment will take up and see if a 10 gallon will hold it easily without being too cramp

can’t speak on the pump you’d need, I just used soft braided vinyl tubing, PVC would be nicer but I’m glad I went this route it saved me $$$ and it’s been convenient since I’ve already made changes to the sump so if I hard piped from the get go I’d of been pretty annoyed
