Sump tank or no sump tank

Upgrading to a 50 gallon from my 16 gallon Cube and I’m thinking this time get a tank with a sump tank. It seems these tanks with built in chambers has many limitations. Any thoughts

I have had a canister and upgraded to sump. I love the latter. Easier to clean and put your equipment in and around. If you are picking out a new cabinet, go a bit larger than your tanks. You will be glad to have the spare room for cords and equipment.

Thank you. I was also thinking of canister. I want to add a skimmer and plant chamber down the road. So I think sump is it. I was thinks a 10 gallon is big enough for a 50 gallon tank.

i have done all sumps on my tank and love them . one my last tank i had a 40 g breeder for a sump and the bottom cracked for some reason and had to shut it down , this time am building a big aio tank and going to try that out

I am doing exactly the same thing atm. the aio will fit everything in but the tank is just too small. have built the sump and the tank is otw..

Hopefully a 10 gallon sump is big enough for a 50. 20% has to be enough. Still kind lost on how big of pump and skimmer now. his pump seems a little powerful but hopefully I can dial it down

Imo I would get a baffle kit from ebay and a Jebao dcp 3500 or 4000.

I opted for an internal filter (not a HOB) for lack of better option but I really like it. Even though I would like to have a sump to hide stuff sometimes, most of the time I’m really happy I don’t have a sump to clean, take care of and one less chance of something leaking on my floors.

As someone who has been sumpless until recently, I can say the sump is a huge plus. I had HOB filters and skimmers for years and the performance of a sump skimmer vs HOB is night and day. Additionally the added water volume can help especially on a smaller system.
I had my drilled 180g plugged with a 40 breeder sitting in the bottom for the first year empty with anticipation of setting up a sump in the future. I just set it up a few months ago with the Eflux return pump you listed and the baffle Fiji cube baffle kit. I honestly should’ve upsized my return pump, but got a really good deal on it. Working on established a good refugium now, but the nuisance algae seems to be out competing my red macros currently.

I agreed. This is my first saltwater tank in 25 years. Back then it was all sump with plastic bio balls only and fluorescent bulbs. Now things are so advanced. But I will try a 10 gallon sump on a 50 with a skimmer, live plant clamber, UV for now. Later maybe a dose pumps later

If you could fit a 20 and it not be crammed I’d recommend doing it versus a 10. 10 gallon tank won’t add much water volume since it won’t be completely filled and also the smaller footprint versus a 20 will limit the equipment you can fit in there.
