I was thinking of a 75 gallon or 40 gallon reef tank once im used to the basics of reefing with my 15 gallon fluval, and i heard having HOB Filter and Skimmers are quite loud and doesnt do the job that well. So im planning of a sump, something like the eshopps eclipse needs drilling the tank which is something that i dont really want to get into. Im wondering if there is any good HOB Overflows and return pumps that u guys can recommend? Im still confused on the how im suppossed to get the water back in the tank using a return pump, do i just put a pipe into the tank with the needed nozzle? Ive already sorted the sump and how im gonna arrange it, the only problem is how im gonna get the water into the sump and out back into the tank safely and nicely. Please do let me know any tips or anything i need to know about sumps. Thank you!

You can use an overflow designed to go over the rim of the tank. Only draw back is if it looses siphon it could over fill your tank. You could set up a float switch to cut off you return pump or set it up so when your sump is empty your tank water level is right at the rim. I used one and set it that way. You water return can go over the rim also.

CPR cs 50 available threw brs has lift pump into any sump you like. Return pump would be 5-600 gallons range. Go with dc so it’s adjustable

Wdym lift pump? I think ive figured the way to get water into the sump using what you recommended, but what do i use for the return pump to get it back into the tank?

Can i know which 1 your using?

I actually did the diy pvc pipe version. Eshopps and aqualink adp have one. There are videos on YouTube about them. I added one to an existing tank so I couldn't drill it.

I have a Sicce return pump. There are alot of different brands. DC is best so you can adjust the output without using a valve to do it. You will need to figure out your tank turn over per hour and get a pump to match.

If you are diligent you can find a full set up used. I purchased two used systems. A 75 gallon reef ready with everything but the lights and sump. A 40 breeder on the Petco 50% sell I use for the sump. It even came with a reef octopus skimmer, stand and a bunch of old rock already bleached. Paid 100.00 . Been running for a year now. The other is a 4ft 120 with everything but the lights for 400.00 that one also came with a tunzi ato.

I just drilled my 75 gallon tank. It's not hard just go slow, there are plenty of videos on YouTube. I used the modular marine overflow ( came with the drill bit) and bought a bit from brs for the return lines. I used a 40 breeder from Petco with a modular marine sump kit. I'm running a vectra s2 at about 400gpm as recommended by the manufacturer of my uv sterilizer.

ETA: I bought both tanks on sale. For the entire setup I'm in under $500 that's both tanks, overflow, bulkheads and drill for bulkheads. I went big, 1200 gallon overflow for surface skimming but the 800 gallon is even cheaper.

Ah i see, i was wondering about the float thing u talked about to prevent the HOB Overflow Box from leaking. Also for the return pump how do u get it back into the tank, do u use a plastic like pipe and a Hang on Nozzle and just put it on the tank? Or do u drill a hole in the tank, and use some sort of piping and put a nozzle throught the hole?

What kind of overflox box do u use to get the water into the sump? Internal? External or HOB? the main part that im confused about is the piping, do i use pvc or do i use those plastic like pipes where it can just bend however. If u dont mind can i see your current setup?

I used this one in the past

I see, 1 question is what piping do i use for the return pump? and how do i set it up? For most people i see them drill a hole in the tank for a nozzle and just connect it with the return pump? Im trying to avoid drilling

Ok i do now understand how it all works, stuff like the Eclipse M Overflow box comes with a drilling guide and all the thing needed, and usually i see people working with pvc pipes for the plumbing, now im confused on the return pump, does the return pump u bought come with a drilling guide too?

IMPORTANT!!

Maybe if i dont have these stuff figured out i might buy a sump ready aquarium like the Red Sea or buying someones used tank from Facebook or something. OR i could ask someone to figure it out for me. Im actually researching about the parameters that i have to look out for at the moment and ill probably have a new thread out about it soon! I appreciate yall so much on helping me out and answering all my questions. Thanks alot!!

I diyed a pvc hang on pipe with a barbed fitting for the hose from the pump. Now I would drill and use loc line.

I used a hose off the pump to pvc you can shape it had 3 90 degree elbow
