I'm setting up a 25 gallon reef. I'm not new to saltwater but I'm trying to build my own sump. My over flow is a 1" bulkhead at the top of the tank. I wanted to use a 10 gallon for my sump but it won't fit in the cabinet. So I went with a 5.5 gallon for my sump. I have a protein skimmer in the sump. I plan on using a filter sock into the first chamber with the skimmer. The next camber I was going to have rumble rock. The problem is my pump. My pump produces more gph then the bulkhead can handle. I put in a ball valve so I could cut it back. But I don't want to cut it to far. Will that be ok? Should I drill the bulkhead out to a bigger one? Thanks for all your help.

First of all check your drain to be sure nothing is pinched or plugged.

2) add second drain (hob pvc is simple to do).

3) you might try a plastic storage container for a sump to get more volume. With the long dimension for and aft, the aft part sticks out and makes for a straight drop for the drain.
