SUMP

Anything that increases the overall water volume is a good thing. IMO.
But a 5 gal sump I don't know?
That's fairly small to add anything in.

So my question is what is your plan to do with it?
By the time you put a pump in it there may not be room for much more.

Depends what you want to put in the sump...and can it all fit inside a 5g tank? If looking to add a skimmer, check the dimensions of the one you want to add and then see if it fits.

But, you need room enough to have at least one partition so your return pump section is separated from the other chamber...otherwise, the water fluctuations may cause issues with your skimmer, etc... which requires a set depth.

I think 5g would be better used as a auto top of reservoir .
Go as big as you can go with your sump then you will have more option on when it comes to filtration I.e refugium skimmer , tank return pump a.t.s .... bigger sump lets you divide the sump up into more compartments for each filtration method you choose to use.

I echo everyone above. You probably need space for baffles, area for filter sock or filter bag, area for sump, area for return pump. Probably will be too tight in a 5 gallon. If I were you, I'd go with a 20 gallon and also make an area for a fuge. Petco has $1 per gallon days once a calendar quarter.

I’m running a hob and a hang on protein skimmer. Someone told me that I should upgrade from a hob. He never mentioned if I should get a canister or sump but o took it as sump. I’m wanting to grow sps and lps. Currently I have soft corals.

Shoul I get a sump for a 37 gallon tank? Also if I did get one would 5 gallons be enough for it?
I am planning on getting a 40 gal breeder when Petco has their sale. I then plan to use my existing 20 gal for my sump. Know that you can purchase the "insides" from Fiji Cube for the Aqueon tanks for about $100. Or you can have your own glass cut to fit it too.

Canisters can be a pain in the rear to maintain and are known as nitrate factories cuz people are too lazy to clean them. Go with a sump. If you're on a tight budget, you dont need baffles. I ran a 30 gallon for years without baffles (had softies, LPS and SPS). But if you dont have baffles, your (new in-sump skimmer) may not function optimally since the water height will decrease with evaporation and increase when you top off.
That being said, there is no need to upgrade the skimmer if the skimmer is performing well for the tank and its inhabitants. The sumps purpose is to house equipment and increase water volume, to keep eye-sores out of the display. If your planning on expanding and using media bags or reactors, etc, then sump is the way to go.
