So I bought a 60 gallon setup and it came with a sump which im guessing is a wet/dry but I think I set it up like a wet sump and I need help on if I have it setup right cause Iv never had a sump before but have had plenty of saltwater tanks. I originally had a 30 gallon with the filter in the back like a all in one and it was running for about 7 months and then I did a tank transfer about a month ago and used most of the water, all the rocks and also added more rocks from a different well established tank , very little of the sand with new dead sand, and all of the filter media which is in the sump right now under the sock. Iv had maybe 1 coral die and just now getting a little brown algae on the sand bed and a tiny bit on the walls of the glass so I’m guessing I must be doing something right and it’s goin through a mini cycle? I do have a aquamaxx hang on back protein skimmer that’s pretty efficient.

How are you operating the display in first picture?

Difficult to make sense of your pictures? i suggest you take the stuff out and envision how water leaves your display tank by gravity and how the pump in the sump pumps water back up to display.

Not sure what you are meaning by that but I have an overflow box going down into the sump and a return pump in the sump going back up.

Nice old school wet dry. You need to get a rotating spray bar, bio balls and Red Sea triple pass skimmer in that baby!
I really don’t have the money right now so that’s why I was asking if I could set it up like I have it like a wet sump cause I heard wet/dry sumps just aren’t as efficient and I already have a aquamaxx skimmer I bought and it’s dry skimming pretty good and getting all the nasty stuff out. I’m new to sumps so I just set it up like I see all these other sumps

Truthfully, I would get a 40 breeder with one of the Fiji or other brand sump inserts. I converted a Gulf Stream wet-dry many moons ago. Doesn’t really have the water volume and space you need. Save yourself a few headaches imo.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking of doing I just wanted to know if I had it setup right and if I should let the water level rise a little bit in the sump. You think I need a 40 breeder? You don’t think a 20 long would be enough for a 60?

It’s a great example of another time when different methods were used. Brings back memories seeing one.

Agree with the advice above, it’s an awkward layout for contemporary reefing so probably best to move on from it.

I’d still love to see one of these used again with modern touches. Rotating spray bar with RGB lighting and variable speed control….life goals!
