Hey everyone.. Need some suggestions here...I am about to have a 20 gallon fowlr tank with a macro aqua protein skimmer..but I want to have it sumpless...gonna put in 20 lbs of live rock..so is it okay? Will I have my fishes happy?.. I am willing to run the skimmer all day if needed...and do I need to dose trace elements in it? I am not going to have corals...BT will keep a starfish when the weather cools...please suggest.. And thanks in advance....[emoji5]

Hold on here, is the tank through the initial cycle already?

What 'fishes' are you currently keeping in this tank?

Some small brittle starfish will do fine, but I doubt you can keep other stars in a tank that size...

Yes the tank has started its cycle...
All I want to keep is fish which are active and not very shy..
What should I do with the filtration?.. Should I stick with sumpless?

20lbs of liverock should be enough. However if you are keeping fish in a tank this small, then you would be well off to pick up a large HOB filter and pack it full of bio-media, such as Seachem Matrix.

Also, you are going to want to choose your fish wisely. Tanks this size can keep very few fishes in the long term. Also take into account the aggresiveness of fish in a tank this size; for example, if you get two clowns, they will likely 'own' the entire tank and make other fish miserable.

Ok sir...I am getting a hob filter then...do fowlr tanks need to be dosed trace elements?

I would think that as long as you keep up with regular water changes, you should not need to dose (your salt mixture should have everything a basic fish habitat would need). I have never heard of anyone dosing for fish, perhaps a FOWLR keeper would be better to advise on this.
