I just picked up a 40 gallon tank that I am going to use as my sump. I am so confused one LFS said bubble traps and baffles were not necessary and just run an open tank. Another told my that my bio pellet reactor wont function properly unless the skimmer is separated and the the reactor drains back into the skimmer section. I have a 2640 gph dc pump. I have about 5 feet of head. My tank is roughly 90 gallons. I had it drilled for a Herbie style drain. 1 1/2" drain, 1" return, 1" emergency. I have not plumbed a tank in about 18 years. I have gathered info from the forums and decided to build my sump left to right drain skimmer section, bubble trap, return section, and a low flow fuge section. Now I am seeing that all that is not necessary and to just run an open tank. This tank barley fit in my stand. I dont want to pull it out later. I am trying to do this right the first time. Before i proceed I am looking for some advice on my sump design and plumbing. The plumbing is only dry fit right now

The main reason for baffles is to keep all the air bubbles from getting up into your display tank. I dont know anything about bio pellet reactors, but I'm sure someone else can help!
