So i am new to sw, I've done my research and have all the equipment and my tank is running fine. I got to thinking today about all the "required" equipment for sw vs. fw. Do fw fish not produce the same byproduct a as sw,? Do they not have the same needs for clean water?. If so why do we as aquarium hobbits put so a high emphasis on this eq for salt and not for fresh? Not doubting ones need over the other just always curious to learn why things work the way they do.

From what I've seen, fish only saltwater tanks get treated very similar to fresh water tanks in terms of care. It's the corals most of us keep that require the devotion and extra care in order to live and thrive.

Also, a skimmer does not work in fresh. Sumps are uncommon but not unheard of, I run one on my fresh so I can keep plants for filtration that won't be destroyed by the cichlids in my display. And I think that's the big difference equipment wise, both use similar lighting, ATOs, heaters....

I've seen alot of sumps on FW tanks.
Skimmers don't work in FW, they don't produce the bubbles like they do in SW.
