Sumps offer more water capacity especially if you have or want a packed display tank.
Tanks are great for sumps. I use a 90 gallon tank for my sump and it works great. Tanks for sumps can be much more cost effective than buying an acrylic sump.

what are your oppinions on sumptanks?

although many use them for a variety or reasons (including my old 55g and 35g) they do add complexity and the possibiliby of floods.

If you set one up be sure to come back here to get instructions on setup, adjustments, and testing.

And you do not have to have sump tanks that cost $100's. a good pump (for about 1 of those hundreds), a plastic storage container, some pvc and elbow grease is all that is needed. the pvc can even by an over the back type so no holes are required in the tank.

Finally, most (if not all) the beneficial effects of sumps can be easily and inexpensively realized by a simple in tank refugium. Just a partition to keep the critters seperated from the macros.
