Hey I got a black sun coral for free that I expected to die, as part of the base had lost its colour. But to my surprise it is completely open after the lights went out (it's only two heads though. How do you get these guys to open up while the lights are on?

Keep living the good life

They are nocturnal so if you could figure out how to make them open during the day, im sure people would pay good money haha. They are obviously non photosynthetic so they require a lot of target feedings

Actually my sun coral opens when lights are on. Why? Because I've got it placed in a well shaded area :) Now it doesn't stay open all the time as it's not the nature of the coral but it's open enough for me to Ooooo and awww about lol. Don't forget to target feed it once in a while. The more you do the faster it'll grow. Good luck and enjoy!

Feed them at random times. They will come out during the day. I will spray some juice on them when they are closed, wait till they open, then feed them. I have a 4 head yellow and a bigger orange that takes about a whole cube of mysis. They are awesome. Good score. Bottom right is the orange. Under the cap is the yellow. They are neat cause you can put them in shaded areas or caves since they don't need light. Good luck.
