Sun coral information

Considering adding a sun coral to my reef at the opening of a cave. Anyone have experience with this coral? My tank is mostly LPS, zoas.

They need to be target fed something such as Mysis. I used to but the top of a bottle over mine and slowly squirt Mysis into the neck of the bottle to keep them in for the coral to have time to eat them. Ultimately my attempt to keep this coral failed, but I have certainly seen some people keep them wonderfully but it does take some effort.

I have Sun Corals in my tank they do require feeding to an extent I feed combination of food to my fish which includes cyclopes I've had them in my tank for several years and they've reproduced very successfully they are on most of my rock work underneath and in the dark I even have them growing on the back glass in caves. I have failed on them also I bought all yellow ones and they did great and I also bought some that were yellow with an orange oral disc that I got no polyp extension and eventually died. If you do buy them from your local fish store see if they'll feed them and hopefully you'll get polyp extension that would be one I would buy. I have bought ones that were closed up and actually never opened even when fed
The great thing about them is they don't take up any space in the light the bad thing about them is they open up fully in the dark so you don't get to enjoy the color so much couple pics are just some random ones growing that popped up out of nowhere

Daily feeding of mysis is highly recommended. Once your coral gets acclimated to a consistent feeding schedule and have been eating well for a few weeks, they can tolerate a skipped meal or two. Some people get away with feeding 3x a week. I myself feed every evening. At this point they are okay if I leave them to go out of town for the weekend.

Keeping them in the dark is easiest, but you can also keep them under strong lighting, just acclimate them to it over the course of weeks to months.

Aquacultured specimens or frags are best if you can find them. If you buy wild caught, be prepared to turn off pumps while feeding to help them catch a meal, they are usually pretty weak at the LFS.
Also if you have cleaner shrimp, and hungry fish, they will love to steal food from your suns!

Yes feeding them regularly is good but I did notice they got accustomed to eating when my fish were fed and opened exactly at the right time every evening but I feed on a regular schedule just my experience with it
