I'm thinking about getting som sun corals I have a few lower light moderate flow areas in my reef tank where I think they would be happy. My questions are:
1. Will they be fine with just being spot fed reef chilli or reef roids?
2. Do they only open in the evening?
3. Anything else I need to know before purchasing them?
Thank you in advance for the responses.

I am by no means an expert when it comes to sun corals but from my experience they can be a great coral. As far as your questions go...

1) I have not tried to feed them only reef roids or the like in the past but I typically feed them frozen food when I feed the rest of my corals. I do however mix in reef frenzy (similar to roids / chili) with my frozen food.
2) A lot of times you can "train" them to be open during the day as well. This is done by feeding the tank during the day so they get use to being open. I have had some where they were almost always open
3) I would suggest you purchase some from a LFS that are being spot fed if possible. That way you know they are healthy and currently excepting food.

IMO ime , they like higher flow. You may have to move them around.

I feed frozen at night to all the fish and the tank. They are usually open.
IMO , they respond to flow more as a feeding response mechanisim rather than just smell and Light cycle.

I just moved my dendros , Black sun coral, to the top of my tank (next to the acros) and they are open much more.

Sun corals are non photosynthetic, so you're going to have to feed them regularly with meaty food, I don't know that reef roids or reef chilli are going to be a sufficient nutrient source for them.

They will eat a whole krill or two and LRS meat. Yep.

So with all this being said. I know salty you said you have them up next to your acro’s (which I am assuming you are blasting with light). Did you slowly acclimate them to light, or are they not responsive to changes in light.

They don’t seem to be , kinda. The dendros are out on and off all day.

The sun coral is moody. It def knows dinner time is coming and would open in the evening.
I moved it about two weeks ago (same distance from the top) but to a better flow area. It’s open a lot more , longer in the morning and earlier in the evening.

And I acclimate
Mostly the same, in the bottom , then go up. I have moved stuff from the booth Right to the top too. The NPS didn’t really seem to care.

4 in from the top of the tank about 400 par.

Yea the acros sps look like carp now. I had a half crash with a razor blade not long a go. Made room for NPS though!!
