So I got this small frag of some Orange sun coral yesterday and right now I I have it on my frag rack about 6 inches off of the sand in a 125 is this ok or should I put it on the sand it still hasn't opened

Pit it on the sand with some good flow

Ok Thank does light matter I know it's nonphotosynthetic but I figured I'd ask

It might take a while, mine open at night at first and then it started opening in the day time.

Never been lucky enough too get one but everyone says too put them in shade...

I had one under some pretty intense LEDs in a 10 gallon when I first started out. Never got it to open during the day and was a pain so I took it back.

Orange or black sun coral? They do respond to flow as well. my black suns are in pretty strong mostly laminar flow.

Orange I put it on the sand bed under a ledge but not completely shadowed
If it doesnt respond, id try a stronger flow area. They're not like zoas or shrooms IME. They are slower to acclimate to the tank and dont open right up. again IME.

So I've bought my first nps (sun) about two weeks ago. The polyps are well burried inside during the day. It's on the bottom 1/3 of my 25" deep tank. I'm Trying to keep it off the bottom for my ease of feeding it, but it's getting less then 75 par. And I'm trying to shade some from the upper rocks. Flow should be decent. I've noticed the tips of the polyps are coming out slightly after lights out, but aren't fully extended even after 2 plus weeks. ive been squirting the tips that are extended with artic-pods every other day trying to get them to fully extend, which doesn't seem to be working. How long can these things live without directly taking in a solid piece of mysis?

quite a while I believe. Id look for a place of higher flow.
In moving my black sun coral around, quite literally half the colony would open up, the half in the higher flow.

I didn't even know there was such a thing as a black one. That has to be pretty cool. It kind of stinks having the vortech pumps not being able to aim them. It's either going to get blasted with light or I'm going to get my armpit wet trying to feed them. I'll try to stick another powerhead in there for the time being to see if they open more tonight. I think I need to add a gyre to go with my two mp40s anyway

yea, I dunno. My black sun coral is right now sitting on top of my rock work 4 in from the top of the tank. totally NOT what your "supposed to do".
Im not a big fan of changing everything for one thing.
