My sun corals used to open when I fed the tank at night and stayed that way until morning. (in the tank about 4 months and making babies , they looked great ). All was well. For the past few weeks they aren't opening nightly or only some of the heads will open.

This roughly coincided with adding my diamond goby, who of course decided to burrow right near the sun corals and he kicks up lots of sand (like all diamond gobies :) )

Could the sand be the reason they aren't opening? All other corals (mixed reef) are as usual and my parameters haven't changed. Alk hangs out around 8.2-8.5, Ca 420, Mg 1480. Temp 77.3. Salinity 1.0255.

Debating moving the sun corals. I have dendros on the other side of the tank that are unaffected.

TIA

Cindy

Yeah I’d move it. I have the same issue. The goby keeps changing its burrow. But now the flame hawk decided it’s a good place for him to sit. Either or, when they are bothered I see them all shriveled up.

How often / what do you feed your sun corals?

I'm assuming you take the time to feed each head or at least make sure each head gets at least a small piece.

Yes a couple-3 times a week. Mysis, frozen coral mix, reef roids, etc. I fed them heavily last night and they opened up and stayed that way all night. All open now too. I might need to feed them more heavily when I do feed. Or maybe they are just cranky.

Sun coral need to be fed daily. Try shading the coral make a cave like structure and place inside that way you teach them to open during the day

They've always been in a cave. I fed them more heavily and now they are back to normal, open at night and through part of the morning. I must have slacked off on feeding them and not realized it :(
