Sunburst anemone browning out!

Hi guys I’ve got two photos of the same nem here posted below. The photo with the single nem was this in the store when I bought it(under t5, it’s now under leds). It has since split to three but browned out completely.

Any ideas what I should do to get the colour back?? Not very sunbursty….. They’re getting enough flow and light. And to my knowledge the water chemistry should be fine.

Temp: 82
Salinity: 1.024
Nitrate: 5ppm
Par: 200

Lower the temperature a few degrees, raise the par to 3-400 (slowly), and feed them some small meaty foods, rarely, but directly.

I think PAR is the most likely cause, however.

300-400??! My acros are in that range is that ok for anemones?

I think the temp is related to the heat from the light because the heater is set to 73 but I’ll change the heater anyways.

Thinking more, 400 does seem a bit much. A lot of vendors with these higher end BTAs raise their par and let the anemone move to their liking. Closer to 300 should get you some brighter colors. Your heater definitely isn't the cause of the heat unless it is stuck on.

So raise the lights to try and get rid of some of the heat and climb to 250-330 par over the next month or so? When should I Expect change in the nems?

How long have you had the nem? Usually that come from stress. I keep mine in about 75 par. That high of light has a high change of stress and bleaching.

Par is around 250-300. 7.9 alk. Acros in top is 360-430 par. 430 cal. 1450 mag. I keep ny no3 and po4 for my 65 sps heavy a little on the high side. I dose kz1234 once a week, I don't target feed. I just feed live phyto with ab+ and oyster feast

I have a nem that split (stressed from moving the tank to another room) into 8 or 9 and some of those have split.

Clones living in the same tank can look incredibly different, so that you might swear they are different lineage which is contrary to their origin as cloned splits.

More light, nutrients and water flow and if they are happy they will stay put and color up however they want, ime.

I would check with the store and find out what they have for parameters, match those and then adjust lighting if you liked.how they looked in the s.

Since December! And it’s consistently been losing colour not the other way around despite having stable parameters…. So not sure, I’m borrowing a par meter today to try and increase light for them. Fortunately I work with the guy who supplies the store with them and I’ve tried to replicate his tank as best I can over the last 6 months or so with no luck.

Others covered everything well, but don't forget about that heat! Stress is really the undoing of anemones, and heat really stresses them out. Healthy BTAs can handle it, usually, but the symbiotic they live with cannot handle it as well, and so it grows in large abundance to protect itself. AKA, browning out.

already got a new heater and setting it up what temp would u recommend to try and keep them stable at ?

77 is a really nice sweet spot for most reef aquariums. That gives you a bit of a buffer on top and bottom for swings without trouble. 77-79 is what I recommend.

Unfortunately there isn't a "one size fits all" answer.
What I do for mine is daily feeding of mysis (while feeding fish) and I keep the par between 50 and 100. It could also be from Nitrate/Phosphate being too high or too low. Typically color would be from lower nutrients, lighting, or flow.

Hopefully this gives you some things to look into.

If you're really worried though, you can send in an ICP test. You may have a trace/minor elements deficiency that is leading to color loss.

I thought lower nutrients would cause bleaching type loss of colour and not browning? Regardless phosphate is a little high and did a water change nitrate still 5ppm tho

This csb is very new to my tank. Almost 2 weeks with me.

Lots of rock to climb if it wants to go above 150 par, it can climb to 300., and if it eants to go to 400, I'll need to move my sps.

No full tank shots on me I’ll take some once I’m home today but not much to see lol it’s just a 10 gal cube w a boulder in the middle. I re checked the par around the tank last night. On the rock there is a high of 190 and a low of 125, I’ve considered moving the whole rock with the nems on it into my 55 main tank but I don’t think I’d be able to effectively light them without upsetting most other corals in there (mixed reef). Here’s a shot of my main tank for fun will post the smaller later.
