i just got 2 sunbursts a week ago. One guy is pretty big, around 3”, the other about half the size.
They are in a reefer 425xl tank with a female lyretale and that’s it. Right now they are pretty shy, the big guy will venture out with the lyretale, the small one stays in back of the rock.

They are both eating frozen PE calanus and that’s it. The big one ate some mysis at the LFS when I checked him out but hasn’t really touched it at home.

The question. How much do they need to eat to maintain their health? I know they should be fed a few times a day at least. But if I put in one cube of the calanus, the things are so small! How much do they need to eat to stay healthy? They will swim after the calanus and peck a few a time. Seems they have to be in the water column, I dont notice any pecking at food on the sand. Hard to believe 10-20 calanus at a time will keep their strength! The lyretail goes crazy with frozen brine, seems to not like anything that’s bigger in size. I’m hoping its feeding will encourage the sunburst to eat more besides the calanus. Im worried too that feeding a cube multiple times a day will lead to bad water quality since they aren’t eating it all. I suppose I can break a cube up but that would say there’s less floating around for them to see.

I had good success feeding LRS food exclusively. Only problem I saw was that it would go after chunks that are way too big for its digestive tract. I think that's what ended up killing mine with an obstruction sadly.

Thanks I’ll have to try grinding it up more into a fine mush. Yes, they don’t seem to tear into or bite at food like other fish.

Perhaps after they calm down more too and are less scared, they will look at other food. Sounds like experience getting my copperband to eat all over again
But he’s a pig now!

I even tried some live blackworms since that’s what turned the copperband around but no interest.

When I first got mine it ate frozen for a week then stopped. Hatching baby brine did the trick and it transitioned back after a couple of weeks to frozen. They can be pretty skittish at first.
