I have 2x 2.5g top fin glass tanks that were used for betta fish. But i put the bettas in a larger 30 gallon tank. They are cute little cubed glass tanks. With a heater. Little spray bar top fin internet filter. And a LED light.. just a normal white light nothing spectular. But it did grow plants jist fine.. and i imagine itll grow easy corals too.

Is it possible to have a 2.5g reef ? Just pop some sand and baby rocks in from my 135g tank. Frag some corals and it run. Not sure what corals id use.. i have 40 different type.. but i was thinking maybe a small 1 peice head of a frogspawn i have.. and maybe a encrusting monti or something.. Not sure id get a fish.. but im sure a damsel or baby clownfish would work.

What do you guys think ?

One thing IMO... is the definition of a "Reef"

IMO it encompasses a certain magnitude of an "ecosystem" that there are lower bounds and upper bounds on.
If you want a tank with corals and a nano fish, I am sure you can do it. But I don't know if I would personally call it a "reef tank."

Because there's tons of information already on here that shows it's definitely possible to do a 2.5 gallon saltwater tank... so what's the point of making a post asking a question with an obvious answer?

I posted my thoughts because the original question "Are Pico Tanks possible?" was moot

I have seen some crazy pico tanks in 2.5G over on another forum (not sure if we can link to it lol). They have a whole journal section on them and 2.5 is a fairly common size.

I’ve done 2.5 pico tanks and a 1 gal pico. No fish and ATO is a must. Totally possible.

you guys be nice

you can link to any reef forum on the web here, we're that cool. check this out

www.reefcentral.com

check out Maritza the vase reef on facebook though, talk about relevance to this thread

I think its about fifteen hundred in corals in a gallon for eighty months. not only is it a fine reef, its destined to outlive most of the reefs on this board if we're going off vase reef age trending. we like to see links from other forums when they have pics or data to offer, the more we share science the more rtr is known as the best forum/go to for updated info

Maritza is a super nano reef for sure.

an amazing dynamic:

Maritza beats the salinity stability of any tank on this forum. We're surrounded by square tanks, they leak air

and have to be topped off multi times a day usually, one fail on the ATO and its toast

but Maritza, with an inner-diameter fitting lid, positive air pressure from up under?

that's no ATO, no machinery adds water to these systems they're evap restriction systems...salinity that requires one or two ounces of water weekly to keep salinity stable. A one gallon vase will beat any tank on this board in terms of salinity stability lol irony.

square tank 2.5 gallon pico, your auto topoff mechanism is your heart/brain/liver and if it fails the pico dies. the $25 abi tuna light off amazon will reef any tiny reef as good as a 500$ light.

vase or fishbowl with inner diameter fitting lid? we can keep 5x the corals in 1/3 the volume for 20 years if needed and salinity shifts wont be the cause of its death. a nerf football will

The sps corals in Martiza are as varied and as quality as any tank I know of here. but in micro scale.

I had a 4 gallon reef in my office a few years. I changed about half a gallon once a week using a solo cup. I used a DIY LED from some spare aluminum that one of the welders made for me. ATO is an absolute must, in my case a fan was needed because the company turned off the AC over the weekends. I'm the end it was more work than I wanted and I shut it down.

Happy Brandon jumped in. Pico reefs are pretty darn easy! No fish and 100% weekly wc and can keep a lot of stony coral pretty easily. I was surprised how well they did, even had a Maxima that grew quite a bit. Ironically it wasn't until moved him into a large tank he went downhill. Wish would have kept in the pico. This was 3g top down.
