So I have a 6g Marineland pillar and I finally got everything set up this weekend but I noticed that after I adjusted my drain (added a elbow and turned in upside down in the water) to quiet it down I no longer have any surface skimming. Oops. Now I have it set up in a "durso" configuration in the back of the tank but could I add a pvc T in the tank and use the top portion as a surface skimmer and the bottom with my Drain cap? Or would that essentially kill my noise reduction?

Or does anyone have any better ideas??

I have been looking at this over and over again.
Hard to surface skim with this but I do have an idea so bear with me!

What I would do is to take a dremel tool and cut vertical slots in the 90
Take a black sharpie and mark the waterline.
Cut those slots to where it is above the waterline mark.
Dont cut them to narrow but wide enough so there is flow through the slots

Hope this helps!
Todd

Thanks Todd! I was thinking something similar so I plan on trying that. I am also going to try some other ideas I have floating around, either way I will post my results and we will see what works best

Along the lines of what Todd said above, but use a straight piece of pipe with an end cap. I'd actually use my radial arm saw raised up to cut slots....the blade leaves an 1/8 kerf (slot). Using a piece of pipe as an example, here's what I'm talking about:
